36FRAMES

The 36 Frames camera, an ochre leather body with a black top plate and a single lens

36 Frames is a film camera for your iPhone. One roll, thirty-six frames, no preview and no retakes. You can’t see a single shot until the roll is developed.

When the roll is full, you send it to the lab and wait. One day the envelope comes back. You flip through the contact sheet and keep the good ones.

Questions & support

FORM 36-Q
Why can’t I see my photos right away?

That’s the whole idea. Nothing you shoot can be viewed until the roll is developed. Not previewed, not reviewed, not recovered. No screen to chimp at, no deleting the bad ones on the spot. You shoot, you trust it, you wait.

How long does developing take?

Two speeds. Express comes back in about an hour. Standard takes anywhere from two to five working days, and never comes back on a weekend. You pick the speed when you send the roll.

Does a faster develop look worse?

No. The look is identical no matter which speed you choose. The only thing you ever trade is time, never quality.

What does it cost?

Your first two rolls are free (on two different films, so you get a feel for it). After that it’s a single one-time unlock for unlimited rolls. One payment, yours forever.

Can I send a roll before it’s full?

Any time after the first frame. The lab develops only the frames you actually shot. A short roll is completely fine.

I’m impatient. Can I get a roll back now?

There’s a Rush option that develops the roll on the spot. It’s free and there’s no limit, but rushing every roll rather defeats the point, and the app will gently say so.

Where do my photos live?

Privately on your iPhone until they’re developed, never in your photo library before then. Once a roll is developed you can save the keepers to Photos or share them.

I have an undeveloped roll. Is it safe to delete the app?

Not yet. An undeveloped roll lives only on your iPhone, so deleting the app takes the roll with it. Send it to the lab and let it develop first. Updating the app through TestFlight keeps your rolls.
